Family Heritage Lotería Event

Lotería de Nuestra Herencia

Monday October 21st 5:30pm to 7:30pm

2301 Lexington Avenue KCMO 64124

Lotería de Nuestra Herencia beautifully coincides with Día de los Muertos as both celebrate the rich traditions and memories of our ancestors. Just as Día de los Muertos honors the lives and legacies of those who have passed, this event allows participants to keep their family stories and heritage alive through creative expression.

Family Heritage Lotería is a creative and meaningful event where participants design their own Lotería cards, each one telling a unique story from their family’s history. The idea is to celebrate and preserve personal and cultural heritage by turning family stories, symbols, and traditions into artwork that can be shared and enjoyed by others.

How It Works:

  1. Inspiration from Family History:

    • Participants think about significant elements from their family’s past that have shaped who they are today. This could include:

      • Family Crests: If a family has a crest or emblem, participants can recreate it on their card.

      • Ancestral Occupations: Participants might illustrate an ancestor's profession, such as a farmer, artisan, or educator, showing the role it played in their family’s history.

      • Traditional Celebrations: Cards could feature scenes from traditional family celebrations, such as a quinceañera, a wedding, or a holiday gathering that holds special significance.

  2. Card Creation:

    • Using art supplies provided at the event, participants draw, paint, or collage their cards. They might include symbols, colors, and imagery that reflect their family’s cultural background or unique stories.

    • For example, a participant with roots in agriculture might create a card featuring a plow or a field, symbolizing the hard work and dedication of their farming ancestors. Another participant might illustrate a traditional dance or festive attire worn during important family celebrations.

  3. Sharing Stories:

    • As part of the event, participants can share the stories behind their cards with the group. This not only adds depth to the game but also fosters a sense of community as people learn about each other's backgrounds and traditions.

    • These stories can be shared verbally or written on the back of each card, turning the Lotería deck into a collection of personal and collective histories.
